The Zicklin School of Business now offers a one-year, full-time program leading to the Master of Science degree in taxation. Described as "incisive" and "practical" in its orientation, the program is organized under the auspices of the College's Stan Ross Department of Accountancy and is designed to train tax specialists in the intricacies of tax law, using a case-study approach.
Baruch's graduate-level tax program is one of the oldest in the country. It is being expanded to meet a growing demand in U.S. and multinational corporations for individuals with a high degree of expertise both in tax laws and in the accounting principles underlying these laws.
"The curricula for the full-time and part-time programs are identical. Both consist of 10 courses," said Steven Melnik, director of the program and professor of accountancy. "What we're doing now is offering CPAs, lawyers, and others who wish to specialize in tax consulting and litigation the opportunity to compress their studies into a year and a summer. Ideally, we'd like to achieve an enrollment of at least 50 students. We think that the market conditions justify this goal."
Faculty members teaching in the MS in taxation program have strong practical as well as academic credentials. The faculty includes industry leaders and former IRS executives. "The program combines equal parts accountancy, law, and business-it is a true hybrid and quite rigorous," Melnik said.
