Zicklin in BriefOver the last year, participants in the Executives-on-Campus Program have grown from being occasional visitors to integral parts of many undergraduate and graduate classes throughout Baruch College. It is, however, in the Zicklin School where many of the participating executives have been most active.

Professionals like Marc Giges, a principal at IBM who participates in Professor Marios Koufaris's E-commerce class, say they enjoy the opportunity to interact with graduate students on the verge of joining the corporate workforce. "It keeps me fresh," Giges says. "I like to catch people early on in their careers." Other executive guest lecturers in Zicklin classes include John Butler (MBA '94), senior vice president and general manager of the Renal Division in Genzyme Corp., who spoke to Professor Lilach Nachum's Business Marketing class, and Jay Spivack, former director of human resources and labor relations at Lincoln Center, lecturing in Professor Mindy Engel-Friedman's Psychology of the Interview class.

Outside of the classroom, the program also launched new initiatives such as Freshman Career Day, which allowed incoming students to hear career advice from some of the College's most distinguished alumni and participating executives.

However, after a rewarding year, the Executives-on-Campus steering committee looked for ways to build more permanent relationships between Baruch students and their executive counterparts. With that in mind, the committee, along with Program Director Marilyn Kahn, developed a range of new ideas aimed at making the 2003-2004 academic season a landmark year in the program's history.

"This will be a year of firsts for the program," says Kahn. "We are launching a new program called the Executive/Student Partnership (E/SP), which takes second-year Full-Time Honors MBA students and matches them with an executive mentor who helps the students through all the hurdles of the job search." The level of individual attention available through the E/SP program gives Zicklin's honors students an immeasurable advantage, according to Kahn.

In order to administer the E/SP program efficiently, along with the other new projects being launched this year, the steering committee divided its members into six new subcommittees charged with specific tasks. James Drogan, a management consultant who also teaches a graduate course in International Logistics, heads the E/SP committee.

The program also plans to continue the expansion of its flagship series of guest lectures, which continues to grow in popularity among the College's teaching staff. Zicklin faculty member Professor Moshe Banai worked with EOC-provided lecturers last year and says that he found their contributions enthralling.

"I asked for the EOC's assistance in inviting two guest speakers to my International and Comparative Management class this summer," says Banai. The first executive was Miles Wortman, the director of global operations for ISx Inc., an IBM spin-off company. The students found Miles's presentation fascinating since he was able to share his personal experience in running so many aspects of his company's operations."

Banai's students also got an opportunity to hear from Howard Smith ('65), vice chairman, chief financial officer, and chief executive officer of AIG, the global insurance and financial services firm. Banai says he was particularly impressed with Smith's candor in answering the students' questions. "The students were asking him all sorts of questions, including one about a succession plan for the top management of his company, and he answered sincerely."

This year, the program plans to draw some of the executives out of the classroom and give them an opportunity to interact with a wider segment of the Baruch community. "We will be inaugurating the first Annual Executives-on-Campus Reception this year, and our guest of honor is James Hoge, editor of Foreign Affairs magazine," says Kahn.

"We will also launch a series of events called the Executive Dialog Series, which are essentially conversations between visiting executives and an audience of Baruch students and faculty. Leo Hindery, chairman and CEO of the YankeeNets and YES Networks, spoke on Oct. 7, and Sallie Krawcheck, chair and CEO of Salomon Smith Barney, will come on Dec. 3." —OF
