JOHN A. ELLIOTT began his tenure as dean and vice president of the Zicklin School of Business on July 1, 2002. He was also appointed to the newly named Irwin and Arlene Ettinger Chair of Accountancy. Dr. Elliot was associate dean for academic affairs at the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University, where he earned his PhD in accounting in 1982; since then he has taught there, most recently as a full professor, and has served in several administrative posts, including director of doctoral programs.
Dr. Elliott is widely published, has served on the editorial boards of several major accounting journals, and, among his other professional affiliations, is a founding member of the African American Doctoral Students Association, which promotes doctoral study among minority candidates nationwide. A certified public accountant, Dr. Elliott worked for Arthur Andersen & Co. and for Westinghouse before embarking on his academic career. He received his BS and MBA degrees from the University of Maryland.
